Ultimate DIY Tricks To Have A Spa Day At Home

If you have a few hours to yourself this weekend, relax and give yourself a recharge that will have you feeling like you’re floating on a cloud and forget about all of the stresses of everyday life. Not all of us can afford the luxury of a day at the spa or even have the time! Here are some amazing tips on how you can treat yourself at home. Your mind and body will thank you. Invite a few friends over and have an ultimate DIY Spa day at home.

Step 1: Get in the Mood. Get your mind and mood into the “spa zone” by playing relaxing spa or zen music, slipping into your favorite robe, lighting some aromatherapy candles in lavender, bergamot, chamomile or sandalwood for relaxation, and sip hot tea with herbal infusions loaded with herbs, spices, flower petals, pieces of fruit and leaves  or why not enjoy a glass of bubbly. Let your body slow down and quiet your mind to fully enjoy the experience.

Step 2: Facial Steam. A simple pot of hot — not boiling — water is the perfect way to start your spa day. It will relax you, open up clogged pores, soften skin, add moisture and prepare you for your next treatments. Wash your face with your usual face wash and exfoliate using a small amount of brown sugar on your palm mixed with a little bit of extra virgin olive oil. Gently scrub for about a minute to slough away dead skin. Add about 3 cups of hot water into a glass bowl, add  any essential oils you like, such as rose oil for dry skin; grapefruit for combination skin; rosemary oil for oily skin; or tea tree oil for acne-prone skin. If your sinuses are clogged, add about three drops of eucalyptus oil. Place a huge towel over head to help trap the steam and breathe in deep through your nose. Steam for 10 minutes and move on to the next step.

Step 3: Body Scrub. Use any exfoliating body scrub recipe that you love and apply it in the shower. Most DIY ones can be used on the face and body.  Make your own Vanilla Chai Spice Sugar scrub by opening a Chai Spice tea bag, mixing it with brown sugar, adding 10 drops of cinnamon essential oil to a base oil, and stir.

Step 4: Hair Mask. Make your own avocado hair mask by mixing 1 small ripe avocado with 1 tablespoon of olive, argan, almond or coconut oil and ¼ cup of milk.  Mix well and apply to hair from roots to the very ends. Wrap hair in a towel and let it soak for about 15 minutes and rinse well. This is perfect for those with dry hair, as the avocado contains moisturizing properties that revitalize dull, lifeless hair.

Step 5: Bath. Pour a can of coconut milk, a tablespoon of almond oil, and 20 drops of lavender essential oil to your warm bath. Your skin is ready to absorb moisture and nutrients from whatever ingredients you choose to add.. Don’t forget to dim the lights, light candles and have your relaxing music playing. Stay in the bath as long as you please and bring that tea or champagne with you. Mash up a couple strawberries with a spoonful of plain yogurt and honey and use as a facial mask.

Step 6: Quick Rinse. Take a quick rinse-off shower and use a clarifying shampoo to make sure hair is free of any excess oil and residue from the hair mask.

Step 7: Foot Wrap. To make the foot soak, combine 2 cups of Epsom salts with 1/2 cup baking soda and zest of one lime in a large bowl, and add  3-4 drops of lime essential oil and 3-4 drops of peppermint essential oil. Stir with wooden spoon to mix thoroughly. (optional, you could add just a drop of green food coloring if you’d like) Pour the mixture into a mason jar and use within a few weeks. Massage Lime + Mint foot soak to feet and put plastic wrap around them. Wrap your feet in a hot towel and leave on for 10-15 minutes. To make a hot towel, get a hand towel wet, wring out excess water, and pop in the microwave for one minute. Don’t skip this step — it’s the cherry on top that truly makes you feel like you are at a spa.

Step 8: Sleep. Remove your foot wraps and rinse off with warm water. Apply your usual night moisturizer and eye cream, and get ready to have the best night you’ve ever had in a long time.
